Chapter 1 page 14: Words of a Dog

Postby KEZ on Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:09 pm

What? No one started a thread yet? For shame!

I ADORE Livy's teeth clutching the book and the watch. AND I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL CHARLIE PUTS THE WATCH ON. eeee!

No one's writing cuz they doesnt like it. Boo hoo. Woe is me.

There were a couple comments- one being CHip saying that he Charlie was adapting a more archaic form of speech. THis made me laugh. I have been writing in the Victorian style for three days, and when I finalized the dialogue for this page, I slipped into that cadence. Good for him for catching that, and good for me for making him sound like that, even if he wasn't supposed to right then. I will change that. (I also forgot the lipstick marks when I first posted this. Always forgetting them blasted lipstick prints..)

Another commenter felt that Charlie seemed no worse for the wear having just been skewered. I actually researched that injury when I wrote the rough script, believe it or not, to see how he would fare. Correct me if I'm wrong Dr. Kez, but the upper left shoulder area is an okay place to get stabbed, and a healthy young man should be able to cope with something like that fairly well.

But throw in another conditional situation along with it... maybe not so much.

Oops. DId I spoil something?

I noticed there was no thread this morning, but I had to get to work and didn't have the time to start it, so I just posted in the comment box. Livy's a darling, even when angry. I'm impressed that Barb can get a corgi to look mean. =) I really like the profile image of Charlie's face. Very nice. =)

That really depends on the depth, angle, and proximity of the wound to the organs/arteries. If it hit muscle, like deltoid, or a shallow strike to pecs, he'd be dandy. The problem is really the bones/ligaments in the area, and the arteries beneath the arm (he didn't get hit near there though). He'd survive most likely, but it'd be pretty hard to use the arm. I personally just thought Brimaz was a pansy, and didn't hit deep enough, or had the spear head perpendicular to the ribs, so there was no real puncture/follow-through. I mean, how much mass do faeries have behind them? I dunno!

I didn't see any real problem with the strike though, or Charlie's reaction! Just smack this dude who complained over the head. He's Claudius! He's been through war and died countless times! He can handle it :D

Thank you Liria! Mean and Corgi are generally not something used in a sentence together, but Livy is not an ordinary Corgi.

And on Claude- Yah ha! Dr. Kez said so!

It IS funny the things you learn when you do research though- like the fact that stab wounds close up on themselves and don't always bleed a lot... This story has me researching all kinds of odd things.

What's ironic about this is that when Ollie got mauled by Shadowdoggie, people complained that he wouldn't pass out from that. I just can't win, you know.

Like you said - it's the artery thing you have to watch for. Well, and then just phenomenal shoulder pain. I did hear once that being stabbed feels more like being punched, and its actaully an aching pain rather than a cutting pain of a superficial wound. Dunno. Never been stabbed. I do remember right after I posted the page where he's going to strike those old ladies I thought,"There's no way he could raise his arm up that high with that wound." But I'd already gone live with it, so it was done. And Claude is now superhuman.

Weird stuff we talk about here...

But yeah- I'll plead the 'fantasy clause'. Or Claude. Make that Fantasy Claude.

Adrenaline makes you able to withstand far times the greater amount of pain and injury than normal.

And if being stabbed by faeries then watching a giant corgi kill them then running for your life doesn't get the adrenaline pumping, I don't know what would.

Yeah, but you'd think he'd get used to it, ya'know?
Seriously... Poor C/C, by know he must be feeling terrible. Cold, wet scared, stabbed, crazy, and now, his corgi is telling him off... How utterly humiliating.

I'm likin' Livy more every page, the doggie has a mean personality when upset, I like it.

And Barb, is true, being stabbed hurts like being punched, open cuts just don't hurt too much until you cold down, and after a figth you take your time for cold down. And is not something i've read or heard about... you know.
The placement of the injury can be safe enougth, Claude have suvirval instincs like everyone so sure he tried to avoid the spear so he could take it diagonally and only injuried flesh. So those who have complainted about that wouldn't have gimme any chance at all, well i'm writting know.

Canterrain, yep adrenaline give you superpowers but after gone you fell very fainted and confussed, and goes out as soon as you fell that aren't in extreme danger.

And more important Barb is you comic and is your world.

If folks actually take the time to nitpick as to whether poor Charlie couldn't defend himself by raising his arms to fight with a spear or whether he could escape in the rain, then they are just missing the whole "charm" of the story.

Of course if it were one of us, we'd all be going nuts nuts, so that's just reality (or...just me. I have low tolerance for pain anyway).

What's best to me about this new page is Charlie's crabbiness. Plus, his dog is scolding him! I think everybody else beat me to the punch about describing this page.

Lastly, Barb, a million people can tell you that they love every page you punch out, but it's still the artist inside you that's never satisfied with what you do. Don't get discouraged! We love what we see so far. Keep it up!

In my head Livy sounds like a female Dr House but with an english accent...And again I am being weird...

But I got to say that I love this page Barbington...

LOL Barb- I remember people complaining about Ollie *sniff* but don't let it bother you. I heard some odd stories & seen some things you would not believe (go to school in Jerusalem for 3 years, you'll some things believe me!). Adrenaline & fear can cause you to do things you never thought were possible. & this is experience talking. So go CC! Stab them ladies! Or rather, don't...

I love this page, I love the way the story rolls in general, I just have no time... It's now 23:40 & I'm supposed to read 25 pages (in English!) for Thursday, & complete a paper for MY university in Israel (due till the end of this month. sigh). Oh, stop complaining, Hagar, we know you like it.

Ahem. back to the page...
I love the fact that in his scared, crazy (or think he is), wounded state, he finds the energy to argue. With his dog. The one that's been talking to him. Man! always have to argue! But Claudius, we love your big nose & chin. & the expressions you did for him! I love his lips in the top right panel...

Livy's starting to remind me of my old dog before she died a few years ago. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that dog had the intelligence of a human in canine form. She gave me (I am not joking) a reproachful look one time when I screwed up at a house chore and didn't tell the folks about it. Another time, she came over and (for lack of a better word) comforted me when I hurt myself by running straight into one of those sharp counter corners.

I miss that dog. :(

p.s. her name was Cookie. American dingo/husky/yellow lab mix. I think she had some wolf in her, too.
