Your favorite genre(s)

Yeah, I'll rock this topic. B)

The poll is very bland, because there are countless forms of music and the poll won't let me put that many down, so I'll ask

What're your three favorite musical genres?

Do ramble, if you'd like. It's always fun to!

-----

My three favorites, in no particular order...

Techno
Repetition, repetition, repetition. Techno music is long and repetitive, and can keep me in a consistent frame of mind enough to draw something long and involved. Trance is my favorite sub-genre of techno, as it..well...entrances me! Heavy rave music is really engaging, too, and can get me drawing upbeat and funky things.
Reccommended artists: Tiësto, Juno Reactor, Paul Van Dyke
Reccommended tracks: "Victorious," by Tiësto; "Hotaka," by Juno Reactor; "Kakumei," by DJ Taka

Classic Rock
I'll say...classic rock spanning 1970-early 1990's. Because there's a lot. I really enjoy cheesy harmonics, drawn-out organ solos, and the kind of feeling a lot of classic rock gives. Mostly the poprock kind, or the driving-down-the-freeway-doing-90 kind. There's something so genuine about classic rock...it feels less about profit and more about just...sharing awesome sounds and words.
Reccommended artists: Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers Band, the Beatles
Reccommended tracks: "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da," by The Beatles; "Message in a Bottle," by The Police; "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," by Blue Öyster Cult

Reggae
This is a newer obsession. It started when I saw an interview on CBS with the Hesidic reggae star Matisyahu, and I was curious as to what he could do. I bought his 'Live at Stubb's' album and was blown away. Now, I pick and pull at the Marley tracks and more Matisyahu than anyone really needs! It puts me in a great mood, and that's something we can all appreciate.
Reccommended artists: Matisyahu, Bob Marley and the Wailers
Reccommended tracks: "Jerusalem," by Matisyahu; "Iron Lion Zion," by Bob Marley and the Wailers; "Drive," by Ziggy Marley

Hm.

A preface. There are very few types of music I won't listen to. (usually, those types of music leave me asking, how can that be called music? Deathmetal comes to mind.)

But... my preferences often lay in things softer... and meaningful. A ballad will almost always catch my attention.

So my favorite types?

I listen the MOST to Christian stuff. But since that's not listed here.. hm..

JAZZ.

This will always hold a special place in my heart. I played in a jazz band (trombone!) for... three... four years? There is something about performing... I don't feel whole when I have no place to perform. And on stage with a jazz band... when you are given the cue to stand and just... play... play whatever comes to heart and literally write a piece of music as you go... there's nothing quite like it. Especially when what you play really connects with the people, whether it be to make them somber or make them dance. I miss being in jazz band. I miss all of the stage.

Rock.

Though I do tend to ... get sick of some oldies. From having to listen to it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for 5 years. Maybe it would have helped if the radio station being played at work didn't play the same 12 songs day in and day out.

Classical/Symphonic.

Again, this is probably something I hold dear FROM performing it. There's something about the swell of instruments as they gather together to bring forth an artwork... good times, good memories.

As CT said, there are very few types of music where I can't find anything that I can appreciate. As a rule, I don't listen to metal, but every now and then I hear something and go "This isn't so bad, actually...", and that's the case with (I think) every genre. My taste just goes everywhere. But my favourites...

ROCK
At the moment I listen to things like Deep Purple, the Who, Pink Floyd and the Doors, so I guess old rock?

I guess, FOLK ROCK, or what you might call it...
You know, it's sort of between rock and folk music? People with guitars and political messages.

CLASSIC/SYMPHONIC
Well, there's just nothing quite like it, is there?

This is ever so slightly off topic here, but CT, you mentioned you like ballads. I've been wanting to search out some good ones to listen to. Do you have any recommendations for me?

Oh, and to stay on topic, I don't listen to anything mainstream at all, really. Most of my CDs are indie Christian music. I don't even like mainstream Christian. I'm actually pretty disgusted with most of it. I dig deep and find the hidden gems that know one else knows about. :D As a consequence my collection is not very extensive, but I'm wanting to expand a little.

There are a few soundtracks I'd like to get, but there's another thread for that topic.

Folk Rock is a big thing of mine currently. Namely, Indigo Girls. Though I'm a little late for them I think. Favorite song: Closer to Fine

90's rock is also a favorite, especially acoustical versions of songs.

And definitely christian rock. Though I really wish KLOVE would STOP playing "I can only imagine." I think that's the name. It got played to death on the country stations, and then someone remade it, and now it's all over the christian stations. I don't mind it occasionally, but variety, people!

AND JAPANESE ROCK! :D

I can only imagine, originally done by MercyMe then some country people I think. Killed to death worse than any other song ever. I have to agree.

I actually stopped listening to KLove because of it. -_-

You know what really bugs me about Christian artists is that so many of them sing sing each other's songs.

Write your own music, people! *grumble*

Kay, I'm done now.

I love the Pillows.
^_^

I'm a classical music buff myself. Pretty hardcore as in... I have different versions of the same pieces by different artists or orchestras. My favorite composers are Ravel, Prokofiev, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Debussy, Tchaikowsky, Copeland, and Wagner, but there are many others. NO I'm not Russian. Well, a bit of something Eastern European somewhere, but htat was a long time ago.

I also love soundtracks- a lot of them have been mentioned here by other folks like Braveheart, but I tend to gravitate towards blockbuster movie composers: John Williams, Randy Newman, and Danny Elfman. But also old movie music too.

I love jazz. All different types. Currently I dig gypsy guitar.

Some ambient stuff is cool once in a while, but I only like the mellow stuff.

Rock- well old skool: I'm a huge Beatles fan. Huge. Dont like the Stones.
The WHo, Clapton, Hendrix, ELO, Queen. Gotta have good melodies, good guitars.

Folky stuff, I LOVE Nick Drake and that one dude, I cant spell his name but he got famous on MySpace. Neil Finn (Crowded House) is my favorite songwriter.

Newer rock stuff I really enjoy System of a Down and some of the QUeens of the Stone Age stuff, Lifehouse, White Stripes.

DONT like rap. Dont like most country either, although that one about 'checking you for ticks' makes me laugh every time I hear it!

Most embarrassing admission: I like the song Girlfriend. Please don't stone me. >.<
