If at all possible, I would put that 'email this comic to a friend/sponsor' at the very bottom of your site, perhaps even past the comments section. Or at the very least, outside the whole frame of the comic and navi elements rather than trying to fit among them. It really is jarring with the comic layout and feels, well,... rather cheap.

Unfortunately, those ads are mandated by Drunkduck and can neither be moved nor modified. They're part of the "comic" tag code. Otherwise, I'd rip 'em off the page. Once DD changed hands and got bought by platinum studios, the ads just popped up everywhere. ><

Wanna move back to SpiderForest, Barb? We've got room. I could talk to Ran for you....*whimper*

Oh, I was afraid of that. Drat.

And comic code? Forgive my ignorance, but I thought you guys set the main comic pages up by hand. :} I completely understand the need for forum code (I grabbed one, myself) but for your main site, would a navigation and comic system be that difficult to set up yourselves? That way you might forgo all unwanted ads.

And as for hosting sites, godaddy isn't bad. They take care of business and are rather cheap with a lot of user control for options. I've used them for a couple years now and haven't had troubles, thankfully. They allow forum code. If you grab a copy of PHPBB and throw it on, it'll take out the need for a hosting site pimp style url as well.

I seem to remember hearing about some site that was darn near free that didn't require all that url and ad spam. Lemme do some digging for you. ;}

edit: waitaminute... this IS phpbb! so now I'm confused... why the 'freeforums.org' stuff if you're using phpbb?

Well, Drunkduck, Comicgenesis, Smackjeeves (among other free webcomic hosts) simplify automatic updating and archiving through the use of "tags." A tag pulls up something in CGI or PHP file to work, and in Drunkduck, the tag is not only connected to comic pages, but also to ads.

It is certainly possible to set up one's own archival system either through straight-up html or other free PHP/CGI scripts, but not on any free comic host. They disallow both PHP and CGI. (EDIT: other than their own, of course)

I'm guessing Barb will buy a domain name once the comic picks up or gets a larger archive. Xylia.com is up for grabs, though the .net is taken. Also, no free comic hosts allow the use of PHPbb, because of PHP, and because of the room a forum takes up. If Barb one day decides to go solo, then she could install one of her own. Freeforums itself uses the phpbb install for the look and basic workings of the forum, and they pay for it with ads. This forum here is in no way associated with Drunkduck, btw. Two separate ad-spamming companies. :D

If you're talking about updating codes and not forum workings, free codes/programs include SomeryC and Autokeenlite, both of which I have experience with. But for now, hosting on DD is free, which is a plus far bigger than the minus of ads and small coding difficulties. Maybe someday.

Though I bet if Barb sold a 5-page Tally side story, she'd get enough from that to buy a site and hosting for at least an entire year. *winkwinknudgenudge*

ONe step at a time. I dont want to dump any money in this until I see that folks are interested.

I wont and cant use Talismen to further it either, for licensing reasons.

It'll get better, just gotta put up with some Vegas style pimpage for a bit.

Thank you for the suggestions.

Oh no problemo. I completely understand about putting down a foundation before building the walls and painting the deck. :} I just wanted to drop two cents towards the cause, this is such a cool place. ;}

Here's hoping for traffic! ;}
