Well, Drunkduck, Comicgenesis, Smackjeeves (among other free webcomic hosts) simplify automatic updating and archiving through the use of "tags." A tag pulls up something in CGI or PHP file to work, and in Drunkduck, the tag is not only connected to comic pages, but also to ads.
It is certainly possible to set up one's own archival system either through straight-up html or other free PHP/CGI scripts, but not on any free comic host. They disallow both PHP and CGI. (EDIT: other than their own, of course)
I'm guessing Barb will buy a domain name once the comic picks up or gets a larger archive. Xylia.com is up for grabs, though the .net is taken. Also, no free comic hosts allow the use of PHPbb, because of PHP, and because of the room a forum takes up. If Barb one day decides to go solo, then she could install one of her own. Freeforums itself uses the phpbb install for the look and basic workings of the forum, and they pay for it with ads. This forum here is in no way associated with Drunkduck, btw. Two separate ad-spamming companies.
If you're talking about updating codes and not forum workings, free codes/programs include SomeryC and Autokeenlite, both of which I have experience with. But for now, hosting on DD is free, which is a plus far bigger than the minus of ads and small coding difficulties. Maybe someday.
Though I bet if Barb sold a 5-page Tally side story, she'd get enough from that to buy a site and hosting for at least an entire year. *winkwinknudgenudge*
