I knew I was going to love this movie. Brad Bird. Pixar. Duh.
Pixar is creating films that are complete works of art. Along with the state of the art and astonishing CGI which amazingly improves with every movie they create, there's the writing, the use of color, lighting, and thematic elements (watch for the water theme in this movie, as well as the skull shaped typewriter!) The care and love that is used is so obvious in every frame- and you know that all of these people are working together to create something really special.
The characters are completely real. You forget that they are fictitious wire frame images, and believe that they exist. You WANT them to exist. They are not archtypes, but real 'people' (even if some of them are rats) with quirks and unpredictabilities and mannerisms. The tale is sweet and engaging, multilayered and wonderful. At it's heart it is about a creative soul going against all the 'shoulds' and finding a way of doing what he loves to do, and that is a story that hits me really hard.
Maybe that's why I loved it so much.
See this movie.
The end.
