Ratatouille

Postby BarbJacobs on Thu Jul 12, 2007 11:37 am

I knew I was going to love this movie. Brad Bird. Pixar. Duh.
Pixar is creating films that are complete works of art. Along with the state of the art and astonishing CGI which amazingly improves with every movie they create, there's the writing, the use of color, lighting, and thematic elements (watch for the water theme in this movie, as well as the skull shaped typewriter!) The care and love that is used is so obvious in every frame- and you know that all of these people are working together to create something really special.

The characters are completely real. You forget that they are fictitious wire frame images, and believe that they exist. You WANT them to exist. They are not archtypes, but real 'people' (even if some of them are rats) with quirks and unpredictabilities and mannerisms. The tale is sweet and engaging, multilayered and wonderful. At it's heart it is about a creative soul going against all the 'shoulds' and finding a way of doing what he loves to do, and that is a story that hits me really hard.
Maybe that's why I loved it so much.

See this movie.
The end.

Ohh... that's sounds so gooooood....

I really wanted to see it in the opening of the Jerusalem film festival last Thursday- they show the opening film outside, near the old city wall, on a huge, HUGE screen (I sew Shrek when it was the opening film, & I set in the last raw, & It was still huge... it was so much fun!)

You get free popcorn, & the crowd is so much fun... But, I couldn't get tickets- they were all sold out... Just got to see the normal way. sigh... :?

I have wanted to go and see it, but I don't have anyone to go with. Most are too busy during the summer and I normally don't go watch movies at the theaters. I wait until they come out on DVD or T.V... :D Glad to hear that it's a good movie so I wouldn't waste money, though.

Brad Bird can't make a crap movie, can he? I mean, come on. Iron Giant. Incredibles.

Ratatouille was fabulous, but it was a bit long. There were some bits that seemed dragged out, but not in a painful way. It just made the standing up at the end a little stiffer than I liked! ;)

Oh, and that animated short at the beginning of the film? About the aliens? CLASSY.
