Only in Australia......

Postby Aerin on Tue Oct 16, 2007 8:35 am

One of my younger brother's and I each have a cockatiel (type of parrot, native to australia). His is a lutino (yellow, kinda like an albino, but for parrots) and my Tobi is a wild grey, meaning he's mostly grey, with white sorta stripes and a yellow head and crest and orange cheeks.

ANYHOW

I got home this afternoon, from school, and notice that a) There's a diamond python sitting on the log in the top right corner of the avairy and b) I can't see Monty.

Tobi was sitting at the other end of the avairy scared to death and squaking at the top of his lungs to get our attention, goodness knows for how long!!!

Later friends of ours came around to remove the snake (my mum wouldn't let me do it :( ) And we got to pat the snake and his Monty-sized lump.

The funny thing is, it seemed almost normal. I was too busy being relived that the snake hadn't eaten my baby (and trying to catch him to get him the hell outa there, which took us an hour and scared him even more poor Tobi), and my brother hadn't really cared much in the first place, that it was just taken as a cool occurance (not quite but...)

You know - somehow I feel like getting home, seeing a diamond-python lodged in your home and act as if that is completely normal and not freaky at all is the "only in Australia" part.

I don`t really want to know what I would have done.

It was kinda sad, i was so occupied with being releived it wasn't Tobi, and then trying to catch Tobi, that it was taken as sort of 'fact of life' and 'sweet, we get to catch a snake!!'. If it'd been Tobi Id've been devastated, but i did get a bit teary when i couldn't find Monty at the beginning. But I love all animals and I;ve always wanted a snake as well, so it was kinda cool. I know that sounds harsh but its part of the circle of life and whatever, and my brother deals with things like this on the inside, without visibly 'breaking down' or whatever, like i woud have done.

I know what you mean.
When I worked at the zoo in Jerusalem I was very natural about all this stuff- went to a refrigerator once & found it stuffed with dead chicks. I remember thinking "oh, so that's where they keep the snake's food". I was hardly even surprised...
Or the half-a-cow I sew once they had there. I looked at the man lowering it from the truck & I thought- "Here is the lion's food. super." & yeah, I guess that snake was hungry.

Love the part about the snake's "Monty-sized lump".

I'm going to add the necessary overtone of comic relief now.
