Music that paved the way

Postby Jerle on Sun Oct 07, 2007 7:55 am

I'm having a discussion on AIM as to music that paved the way for today's modern music. AC/DC, Metallica, and Elvis are all high on my list of bands that pushed the bar enough to pave the way. What bands do you think were influential? (discussion topic)

I guess I should mention Jimi Hendrix, although I don't like him myself... He knew how to play guitar, that I give him, but singing wasn't for him.

Beatles. definitely paving-the-way-sorta-band.
Edit Piaf, Biliy Holiday- the Britney Spears of their time (not music style or quality, but the scandals).

My mom was a Monkeys fan which my dad still tease her about to this day. But I do agree they did some good songs and you could say that they were one of the first boybands in some ways.
Someone I think put their mark on musichistory is Queen, they had a lot of fantastic stuff. Others are Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath (Black Sabbath aren't really anything I listen to but they did influence to days music alot), (most of the swedes will know of my next choice and agree that they did alot to influence the swedish rockmusic) Nationalteatern, Abba(You got to admitt they have been a big influence in popmusic no matter how corny they can seem to todays youth) Ebba Grön (is another band that have made theire mark in swedish music). Hmm I think that was what I wanted to say on this. *goes of humming on another queensong*

Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie... etc.

I think so much of how things sound today just wouldn't be without jazz.

Cole Porter! The master lyrical craftsman.

Along with Irving Berlin, and Rogers and Hart...the ol' warhorses of popular music of the 30s-40s.

I'm shocked nobody's mentioned Michael Jackson. Perv and child molester though he may be, he did have a huge influence on modern pop culture, as did Madonna.
