Xylia Blog: Pacing pacing

Postby BarbJacobs on Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:41 pm

I decided to make a little blog of whatever info as it occurs to me. Really nothing horribly important- just ramblin's.

I'm pacing across the floor. Pacing.

Not really! ^_^ I'm actually thinking about 'pacing' as in:
"• the speed or rate at which something happens, changes, or develops •"

You know how stories just start to fall into their own 'thing'. Xylia is starting to get to that point a little- but it makes me worry (cause that's what i do!) that the one update a week is too slow for the type of story it is. One update a week is fairly slow for ANY story, I spose. Not that I can DO anythign about that. I'm trying to stuff as much as I can into each page without being to explanitorily boring, but also without leaving too much out (something I'm already being criticized for a bit, which I worried about also.)

The next three pages (which I originally thought would be one or two pages) would be best viewed one right after the other, but...well you all know MY story. Grrr. NOW I'm pacing. ;-)

After I get through the next three updates, the actual 'story' of Volume I starts, although it too will flashback a bit at the beginning (albeit only a couple of hours). I don't know why I'm using this chaotic time tripping storytelling approach, but it just seems to fit Claude. Or Charlie. You know.

That's all I got to blogger about right now!

heh. Well, tales of pylea updates weekly, and we haven't had any problems with people keeping up with it... TTG's MONTHLY, and after almost three years, we still haven't had but the occasional complaint about it.

Really, it all depends on what schedule you set for the comic INITIALLY. If you tell people "yup, we'll be updating daily/three times a week" and then you can't make that, that's when you'll hear people start to gripe.

But, if you say "Ok, we're going to be weekly" and stick to that schedule faithfully as best you can, your readership will adapt to the schedule fairly easily.

Update as you feel comfortable, Barb, we'll all still be reading whether you update weekly or every six months. :D *glomp*

Thanks, Matt. It's just in my nature to worry. Xylia had a good position in the voting a couple weeks ago, mostly becuase of the link that Sarah E put up on Inverloch, but it's been dropping steadily ever since.

I'll just keep pluggin away!

I think once there's a good bulk of this stuff online for visitors to savor, once-a-week updates won't be so painful. Establishing the story, giving folks something to come back for.........and then dangling it over their heads. :P

Exposition can be cumbersome, but it's usually necessary for fantasy tales- because quite frankly, people want to understand what the heck is going on.

I don't think weekly updates is a bad way to go, but if you feel like you want to post more, why not set something up like fan art Friday or maybe a form panel where your characters answer questions written in?

Personally, I'd rather have good quality, consistent updates once a week than rushed or inconsistent ones. Besides, once a week, that's a decent update schedule! Not everyone is Sarah Ellerton...

And if we all were, how boring would that be. Seriously. No Christopher Lee noses or corgis or purple sparkles. ):

If you keep it up- no problemo.
I had this web comic I was reading, & the updates become so bizzar that I just stopped- it was too annoying. One week it was m-t-f & then Sundays, & then Mondays again etc...
The ONLY problem I have so far with Xylia, is that the writing is a bit too small for me, so I have to get a closer look... but most of my stuff is too small, & the screen is much closer then usual... So young, & so blind... (-7 in case you were wondering)

Updating

Postby Stranger on Wed Oct 03, 2007 4:28 pm

Wow, this would be the first time that I realized I was reading a webcomic produced by the same artist as another one I check occassionally. I am bad in reguards to actually checking the author out and such...it normally takes a steady diet of win for a year before I even get curious about the artist producing the comic. I like the pace of this comic so far, it provides for some tension....as much as I like two pages twice a week, there is just so much one can do. And Quality before quantity <sp?>, of course I am by no means implying anything negative about Intervlock <shakes head at himself for his spelling> for I eagerly await the updates on the other project that she is working on requiem. Thank you for putting your art on the web, and continue your excellent work!

Posting

Postby Stranger on Thu Oct 04, 2007 7:28 pm

Your welcome, as to posting I have no clue. Its certainly not because I have leet hacking skillz or anything. I think its just the fact that things like the internet rely on this thing called technology. Add to that the fact, that I have this strange interaction with technology....and anything really goes. Occassionally, I will get bit on the ar$* and not be able to post where I should be able too/not get into a place I made...and then like now, able to post and get to places where I have no clearance. It really just depends on how funny the situration is gonna be which way it goes it seems...funny to who I dont know but since I believe in various natures of spirits I am sure at least one sort gets glee from my bedevilment.

You should have a panel involving cookies. That's a huge necessity.
*nod nod*
Seriously

Actually, my suggestion is draw the stuffs people want, the nitty gritty, then put the stuff that COULD be considered filler in a published version. Kinda like extras on a dvd
