The few chosen ones I read

Postby Krozam on Wed Sep 05, 2007 3:02 pm

This has been mostly copied from a similar thread in Inverloch where I posted a while ago. I edited some that most needed editing, but there's still probably some sentences left that'd seem a bit weird here.

http://www.errantstory.com - Errant Story - My current favourite. THE favourite. A 17-year-old mage girl, desperate to graduate from her school, embarks on a journey to find a god whose powers to drain and to become "an insane, all powerful demigod and enslave all of reality". :P Interesting characters and plot, excellent (if b&w) art, some quite deep themes and one of the most interesting worlds ever created for webcomics. Oh, and the Best. Dialogue. Ever. And there's a lot of it.

http://www.garanos.com - Garanos - The first volume of this fantasy/romance story is now ready. The plot isn't very complex, but the characters are very likeable and the storytelling pretty good. The best part, however, is the unique art.

http://undertow.dreamshards.org - Undertow - This one updates rarely and irregularly, but every page is worth waiting. The artist is probably my favourite in the webcomic world. The story is about a demon girl who's trying to find out how the weak humans managed to conquer the world, and a young soldier who's trying to find a kidnapped princess. Check out also the artist's DeviantART gallery and another comic. She draws incredibly hot characters (both male and female), if you like the style. :P

http://www.cascadiacomic.com - Cascadia - This one I found from Sarah's link list, and it's a pretty good fantasy comic from every aspect I can think of. Definitely worth reading.

http://worldbreak.ashen-ray.com - World Break - A fantasy story only in the beginning, but it looks very good. The art is easily professional level and the story and characters look good.

http://directionsofdestiny.com - Directions of Destiny - An excellent fantasy comic, but unfortunately on a long hiatus. It will continue, though, I'm quite sure. The manga-style art and the deep story and characters already made a home in my heart, even if only one volume is complete.

http://www.haru-sari.com - Haru-Sari - An excellent fantasy comic in every aspect, including deep themes. The only reason I don't follow this one actively is the angsty atmosphere that requires a certain mood to make me able to enjoy this.

http://blackbird.ashen-ray.com - Blackbird - A very interesting plot and two extremely cool and interesting (female!) characters are the best points of this fantasy webmanga. Definitely worth reading, especially now that the author is redoing it from the beginning (the first version was a bit scetchy and unclear).

http://www.earthsongsaga.com - Earthsong - I don't think I need to say much about this, I have the impression that it's familiar to most Inverloch-readers. I think it's pretty good, though nowhere near Inverloch and my other favourites.

http://talesofpylea.comicgenesis.com - Tales of Pylea - Not very far in the story, but far enough that I can say this is going to be a great webcomic. Cool main character, great art, mysterious plot and the fact that this is fantasy are but few of the things that affect my judgement. The main character is a mysterious mage who is suddenly entrusted with a mysterious artifact that is desperately sought by another cool, mysterious and powerful character.

http://ttg.comicgenesis.com - Tales of the Traveling Gnome - This short fantasy story updates only once a month, but it is scripted by the same skilful writer than Tales of Pylea, and the art is extremely high quality. It one of those RPG stories and tells about a group of adventurers who penetrate an old castle occupied by a powerful witch in search of a powerful artifact. I know, sounds cliché, but the scripting and art make it well worth reading.

http://www.noneedforbushido.com - No Need for Bushido - Extremely funny until it recently changed for much higher quality art and more seriousness. The story takes place in Japan, apparently a few hundred years ago. Excellent characters and dialogue. Definitely worth reading, also the alternative scripts and other extra stuff.

http://www.rmcomics.com/Mirror/Current - The Gods of Arr-Kelaan - What would you do if you suddenly became a god? Very funny yet very thoughtful, this greatly imaginative comic is one of my current favourites. The art is seems mediocre at first glance, but don't let it scare you: it serves its purpose better than a more realistic style would. You'd better read the earlier comics of the same series first, they are accessible from the main page.

http://www.drunkduck.com/Purgatory_Tower/index.com - Purgatory Tower - One of those "in the beginning but looks promising" cases again. High quality coloured art and interesting starting point for the plot made me check this out (along with the fact that this, too, is fantasy), and I rather liked it.

http://angrydmonkey.com - Angry D. Monkey - It's about a monkey boxing master who's guarding an island by the request of a flying, french-speaking and magic-doing imp (or whatever) with his little brother and frog friend. Oh yeah, and the goddess Aphrodite herself is madly in love with him (to his annoyance). Need I say more? :P

http://exiern.com/index.php - Exiern - I'm a bit hesitant about putting this here: it's perilous. If you decide to check this out, promise me first that your relatives or friends won't hold me responsible if you die of laughter during the process of reading this comic. I almost died of laughter at least fifteen times (NNFB and Errant Story did that only a few times, and they are both consideraly longer). It's about a barbarian who is turned into a hot chick by an evil and all powerful (if somewhat unlucky) wizard, while rescuing a hot princess he had kidnapped. Yeah, it's a fantasy parody, and a damn good one. The only minus is that while half of the pages are done by hired professional artists, half of them are done by the writer herself, and she's WAY worse in drawing than writing.

http://www.ayzewi.com/index.php - Wrongside: Beginning - Fantastic art, one of my favourites on that department. The characters are mostly antropomorphs, but they're very interesting personalities, so even if you don't generally like them, check this out. This is just a prologue to a larger story and it concentrates on character development rather than action, but it's still well capable of holding the reader in its grip. The artist's DeviantART gallery is also worth checking out.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html - Order of the Stick - It's unelievable how lively stick figures can become if their personalities are well enough made and the story is long enough. And this comic is pretty long. And it's funny, it (too) almost killed me a few times. It's worth reading even if you're not very familiar with D&D.

Yeah, almost every one of them is fantasy. It's my specialty. I rarely bother to check other that fantasy webcomics, unless there's something extraordinary in its description that arouses my interest. But I assure you, they're all good. Fantasy is a plus, but it alone isn't even close to enough to make me read a webcomic.

Aha! I knew I recognized the writing in that post... we get hits from that post on occasion. :D

Dunno about the skillful writer part, but I'll agree about the artwork for both constantly. :D *glomp*

Edit: Oh, and chapter three of Tales of Pylea will be introducing probably the cutest character Humbug will draw for the ToP universe. :D Just FYI... and you get to see said character here in just a few pages.

Oh, don't be modest. You know you're a good writer, why else would so many webcomic artists make you their scripter? :P

Really? I'd like to taste them some time. But I still don't see what's that got to do with scripting? :P

I actually just about became a chef at one point in my life, fyi. :p little bit of trivia there... apparently being deathly allergic to mushrooms means you don't have much of a career in the culinary arts.

Kez, cooking and baking are two completely different things. I'm a lousy cook, but an acceptable baker. Not that I'd do much of either nowadays...

I figured it might be time to expand the list, since I've found a lot of good webcomics lately.

http://www.drunkduck.com/The_Dreamer/index.php?p=276723 - The Dreamer - It tells about a girl who has very vivid dreams about the late 17th century. I don't know yet where it's going to lead, but the art is excellent and the storytelling good enough to keep me reading even if I get the feeling that it's more directed to the other gender.

http://sorcery101.net/ - Sorcery 101 - A very funny and interesting fantasy comic. It happens in a world very similar to our own - today, not in the Middle Ages. Excpet that there's magic, vampires, werewolves etc. In the beginning it doesn't seem very serious, but the further the story advances the deeper the characters and the story get. One of my current favourite series.

http://www.wanderingones.com/ - The Wandering Ones - A post-apocalyptic story about a group of trackers. There are fantasy elements, but mainly in the form of tricky spirits. It took me a while to get into the story, but when I did, I found it very interesting. Also one of my current favourites. I recommend reading also Shin Kage, there's a link in the main page.

http://www.darkencomic.com/ - Darken - Not quite the traditional fantasy story: it tells about a party of evil adventurers seeking three powerful artifacts. Pretty funny. Check it out if you long for a different perspective.

http://www.culricschronicles.com/index.html - Culric's Chronicles - Don't be scared of the mediocre art, the characters and their story seems interesting enough to make up for it. This one's still pretty much in the beginning, so I won't bother explaining anything. Just read the few pages that are there.

http://key.shadilyn.com/index.html - Key - Another fantasy story still getting wind under its wings. Nothing exceptionally good in this, but I think it's still worth reading.

http://www.junglestudio.com/roza/ - Roza - This is still beginning the second chapter, but it's one of the most promising webcomics I've ever seen. Great art and storytelling, every page is an enjoyment in itself. Kind of like in Barb's works. Absolutely worth reading.

http://www.lastblood.net/main/2006/12/2 ... od-begins/ - Last Blood - Before reading this I'd never have believed that a story where zombies play an important role could be worth reading/watching. Last Blood is more than worth it. The vampires and the great art help, of course. This is one hell cool story that will most likely some day be a movie, too. Just remember one thing: don't comment about any problems you find in the pages, because the writer can't take criticism.

http://www.marrymemovie.com/ - Marry Me - Another work from the same writer. A very funny and cute story about a celebrity who marries an ordinary Guy (yes, it's the guy's name) in a spur of a moment.

http://nopinkponies.com/ - No Pink Ponies - A funny strip from the artist of Marry Me.

http://xena.lunarpages.com/~sygnus2/wayrift/index2.html - Wayrift - A webcomic that takes place in the same universe as the video game Final Fantasy IV. I've never played the game, but the comic makes me want to try it. That should be enough of a recommendation. Check out Shimmer, too.

http://talcomic.com/index.html - Thunder and Lightning - A pretty interesting and funny story about an arrogant young wizard who accidentally bonds a werewold into his familiar. The art is mediocre, but the story makes up for it.

http://goblinscomic.com/ - Goblins - Another Dungeons&Dragons comic. It tells about a group of goblins who get tired af being slaughtered by random adventurers and become adventurers themselves. This one is well drawn and almost as funny as Order of the Stick. It also presents some totally kick-a** goblins and heavy themes. Oh, and the best drawn fight scenes I've ever seen. In short, this is one of the very best webcomics out there.

http://www.gomanga.com/webmanga/index.p ... aoi&page=1 - Aoi House - This one actually deserves to be called a "webmanga", even if it's not Japanese. The art is clearly professional level and manga-style, and the pages are even read from right to left. It tells about two student guys who end up living in the same house with five yaoi-crazed girls. At first it's a nightmare, but somewhere along the way the girls finally learn some empathy. Even though it's nowhere near as good as, say, Love Hina manga, it's worth reading. If not for anything else, then at least for Echiboo the Perverted Hamster.

http://kitsune.rydia.net/comicsfeywinds.html - Fey Winds - A pretty funny and well-drawn comical fantasy adventure. It's a pretty enjoyable read, even if it's nothing too special.

http://green.nabuca.com/index.html - The Tale of Yanlin - Another one still in the beginning. Seems pretty interesting, I recommend reading what little there is.

http://www.bookelves.com/index.php - Alfheim - My latest find. It tells about a bit different elves, faeries, sprites and goblins than you're used to. They're inspired from folklore, instead of Tolkien's texts. After the first two volumes I got so completely hooked that I couldn't lift my eyes until I'd read it all - took me half a day. It nearly killed me with laughter several times. The characters are very loveable, and the story is half the time extremely funny and half the time deep and... well, epic. It's the friggin' most epic webcomic I've ever read, in addition to being so damn funny! If that's not an accomplishment, I don't know what is. Oh, wait, I do know: avoiding getting married in one's own wedding. That, too, is one of Baughb the Elf's deeds. So, anyway, Alfheim may not be my new favourite - Errant Story is just too good - but it's damn close. It's my second favourite webcomic. You'll be a fool if you don't check this one out.

Well, I think that's all for now. I hope this'll be of some help to someone, since this took me a couple of hours to write... :P
